[GF-Users] EL10 and x86_64-v2 Request for Comments

Hi Peter

Thank you for asking and for taking this on. Suggest to plan to build for option 1 initially, and then if there is a real need in the future, consider case by case builds for option 3.

For the orgs that I represent we would prefer either options 1 or 3. I do still have some servers that have v2 CPUs but would prefer not to indulge option 2.

Although I have installed and explored Alma 10v2, my conclusion is that I will either stay with Rocky 9.6 until EOL 2032 or upgrade hardware. Maybe I have missed something, but I feel that there is good reason why v2 CPUs have been deprecated in in some platforms including VMware ESXi 8 and that maybe the reason we are all using EL is because we needed a robust platform. To me then, it is more consistent and easier to infer system integrity with a pure and fully tested EL9.6 derivative than with a "partially" tested EL10 workaround. My CPUv2 machines are getting kind of tired anyhow and I would welcome a reason to upgrade them. If at sometime in the future I discover that I am wrong, then probably I would not be alone, and that would be the right time to ask for a special build.

Mike

Subject: [GF-Users] EL10 and x86_64-v2 Request for Comments

Hi Everyone,

I'm currently working to create an EL10 branch of Ghettoforge and I have a choice to make, so I'm asking for input here.

RHEL10 (and most derivatives) do not support x86_64-v2 anymore but require at least x86_64-v3. Currently the lone exception is that Alma Linux has a v2 release of EL10 and has built EPEL for v2 as well. So this leaves me with one of three options:

1. Just build GF10 against Rocky Linux as I have since EL8 and not have support for x86_64-v2. This should be fine for the vast majority of users.

2. Build GF10 against Alma Linux 10 x86_64-v2. Since backward-compatibility is a thing with x86_64 it will work fine for v3 distros as well but it means that Ghettoforge packages will not benefit from the additional performance-enhancing features of x86_64-v3.

3. Build GF10 against both with separate v2 and v3 repositories. This will require a lot more work and is something that I would rather avoid unless there is a lot of demand for it.

So ... At this stage I am leaning towards options1 unless I get significant feedback from people wanting v2 support then it will be either option 2 or 3 above depending on the exact feedback I get.

Please respond here and let me know,

Thanks,

Peter Ajamian
